Ken Livingstone claimed yesterday he trapped the Government into bidding for the Olympics.
The London mayor said: “I didn’t bid for the Olympics because I wanted three weeks of sport.
“I bid for the Olympics because it’s the only way to get the billions of pounds out of the Government to develop the East End.
“It’s exactly how I played it to ensnare the Government to put money into an area it has neglected for 30 years.”
Mr Livingstone was quizzed about the Games – which will cost at least £9.3billion to stage – at an election meeting before the May 1 mayoral vote.
Tory rival Boris Johnson last night faced a possible sleaze probe for not disclosing a lucrative TV shareholding. He has owned 33 per cent of Finland Station since 2006, even though MPs’ rules say any stake over 15 per cent must be registered.
His spokesman said the shares were registered yesterday and blamed an “oversight”.
But it is the third time his finances have sparked a storm. He previously failed to register 16 cash gifts worth £234,000. The Electoral Commission has also rapped him for not properly declaring £45,000 donations.
