5 businesses ‘could go bust

CROSSRAIL is threatening the future of dozens of businesses which have until next week to find new premises before the bulldozers move in, it has been claimed.

A total of 55 businesses – including pubs, restaurants, law firms and PR companies – have been ordered to leave Soho, central London.

They claim they were given just three months notice of the November 13 quit date, despite plans for the western ticket hall for Tottenham Court Road station in Dean Street being on the table since 1990.

Some claim they have been left in the dark over compensation for moving, without which many will go bust.

Law partner Ian Penman says his firm has been landed with a six-figure bill after it was told to vacate its offices to make way for the £16billion underground rail project due to open in 2017.

‘If we don’t get sufficient compensation, we’ll probably go out of business,’ he said.

omenico Savarese said his busy pizzeria Spacca Napoli would now be forced to close with the loss of all 22 jobs after he was unable to find suitable new premises in time.

He added he had received no information from Crossrail on compensation for the loss of his profitable business just off Oxford Street.

A spokeswoman for Crossrail insisted businesses directly affected were notified before July 2008.

She said tenants were eligible for compensation under the national code for compulsory purchase.

Khoodeelaar1 told you so! That the ‘CrossRail scam’ was crass. It is crass. Each and every single utterance of its promotion is crass. Why? Because it is being peddled by the Big Business interests who want to pocket huge loots in the name of the project and from the UK public. Crossrail is also crass because the same lobby interests who are hostile to democratic audit of public funds and facilities are promoting it.  Crossrail is crass because it is being promoted at the expense of transport. Transport infrastructure that is crumbling in and around London. That infrastructure needs more attention than a new scam contrived by the Big Business to make fast and unedited bucks. Unaudited? Yes, unaudited. Who ever audited the £100 million that Alistair Darling [then fronting the DAFTY, 'UK Department for Transport' that has been the touting outfit in Whitehall operating the scam for Big Business] gave away from the UK public to CLRL in 2005? Has anyone seen any audit of where that money went? Who actually took how many £millions by way of bonuses YEARS before bonuses hit the headlines?

London mayor Boris Johnson has announced that developers involved in the regeneration of the Nine Elms area of south London – which stretches from Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station – will be exempt from paying the Crossrail levy.

The Crossrail levy was to be charged on applications for additional office space above 5,000sq ft in London’s “central activities zone” – covering Westminster, parts of Camden, Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, the City, Lambeth, Kensington and Chelsea, and Wandsworth – and the northern Isle of Dogs.

A spokesman for the mayor’s office said it was not yet clear whether the contributions developers would make to the Northern Line extension would be less than, or exceed, the amount paid under the Crossrail levy.

Johnson said that the developers of the scheme – which will include 16,000 new homes and create up to 25,000 new jobs, according to Wandsworth Council – will instead be expected to “pay towards”  the planned Northern Line extension from Kennington through Nine Elms to Battersea.

A spokesman for the Mayor’s office said the method by which the developers would pay for the Northern Line extension was being “worked on”, but he added that it would be “through the planning system, rather than via a business rate”. 

Plans for the regeneration of Nine Elms involve the conversion of almost 200 hectares of derelict and underused land into new communities with green open spaces and new transport links, including a pedestrian and cycle bridge linking Nine Elms to Pimlico and the extension of the Northern Line to Battersea.

Edward Lister, leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “The announcement is a sign of just how committed the mayor is to securing the vital transport improvements that will ensure the success of the whole project.”

Rob Tincknell, managing director of Treasury Holdings UK, which will redevelop Battersea Power Station as part of the Nine Elms regeneration, said he was delighted that the mayor has given such a strong affirmation of the importance of the Nine Elms regeneration to the future of London.

Johnson plans to extend the Northern Line to Nine Elms using an innovative US-style funding tool called Tax Increment Financing (Tif).

Tif allows a local public body to borrow for capital investment in a designated area by securing the loan against the increases in tax revenue expected to be generated by the development of the infrastructure.”

The piece is confirmation that Boris is caught out in the CRASSrole confusion all of his own making… He is now dropping the draconian and the crass demand for CrossRail levy which he had imposed on all and sundry.
